How Can I optimize Metadata for SEO on multilingual sites?

The following article applies to Global Delivery Network project types.

You can optimize your language sites for search engines by adding HTML <link> elements in the header of your source pages, and the Smartling Global Delivery Network will automatically include the appropriate link for each translated language page. These tags are slightly different depending on the search engine you target.

Google recommends using HTML <link> tags with the hreflang attribute in order to help it properly index language sites; for example:

<link rel="alternate" hreflang="fr-ca" href="fr.mysite.com/" />

Each page on the site should include the matching link on the translated site(s); for example:

http://www.mysite.com/about

should have an hreflang link of:

<link rel="alternate" hreflang="fr-ca" href="fr-ca.mysite.com/about" />
